:: Fun with Watercolors :: by stoic1985 :: Fun with Watercolors :: by stoic1985
This is a second attempt at watercolors. Original size of paper was A2 and the theme was 'apple' with no refs so they end up looking kinda abstract. Which is your favourite?

I must say I learned a lot about controlling the water flow, which is never easy since the colors tend to bleed and create fugly smears and water stains. It's still not very good, but I hope to improve with time.

Time taken: Around 3 hours.
Tools: Cold-pressed watercolor paper, Mantegna Water Colors, color contrast tweaked in PS.

Oh, btw art school rocks. :)

I like the second from the left on the bottom. I like it when the colors bleed into each other
and mix. I'm just learning to paint with watercolors. Are the colors supposed to stay seperate? I don't know.
I like these, though, although they look more like abstract earths to me! Thank you for this work.

This work is so old it's almost embarrassing, but I am glad you like these. There are a few approaches to watercolors, but what differentiates it from other medium is its water flow and transparency. The bleeding and mixing can be fun but it requires tons of practice to get it to "look right" without undesirable spills and a muddled painting.

There are those who paint watercolors in an opaque manner with minimum water flow a la acrylics, but that undermines the nature of watercolors personally.

Hope that helps, watercolors are oodles (and puddles) of fun. :)

I can tell the first one (yellow) got blended a bit too much, like it was your first try or something, and then all the rest seemed really well done. Like, the bleeding stopped and created actual lines! I'm so impressed! I hate watercolors for that, but you sir, have certainly done well.
I'd have to say my favorite is the green one, cause it has little shiny light marks on it, and seems more special than the others, hehe. Kinda makes me wanna eat it, lol.

You read my mind, Sakura. The lemony one is my first pic and the colors ran faster than a marathon. x3

The trick or the cheat in this case is to wet the area you want to paint first, say the background, so the colors don't really bleed into the dryer areas. The later pics bled a little but I use a sponge/dry brush to dab them away real quick.

The green one kinda resembles a green apple doesn't it? Thanks for commenting. ^^

Well, reminds me more of a gumball that was partially eaten, lol.
But thank you for the tip. I imbedded into the artsy part of my memory stash so I'll remember if I someday wanna try watercolors again. Haha XD

Thank you Sandy, it was my second attempt at watercolors and I was pretty excited with trying a new medium so I went wild with the colors.
